WINTER OUTDOOR PROGRAM

GENERAL INFORMATION 2010

While many of us embrace winter in the North Country, many see it as a long and difficult time.  The Winter Outdoor Program is designed to expose our children to some of the fun outdoor activities available during the winter months and teach them lifelong skills that will provide them with years of enjoyment.  The Program offers students in Grades 1-6 the opportunity to choose from one of four programs:  (1) downhill skiing, (2) snowboarding, (3) cross country skiing, or (4) winter fun.  Kindergarten students are invited to participate as well, if accompanied by an adult.   Kindergarten parents should refer to the separate Kindergarten Information Sheet for additional information.

You may think it is too early to think about our Winter Outdoor Program, however, early planning is required due to the amount of planning and paperwork involved.   The program is scheduled to run for 6 weeks, each Friday, beginning Friday, January 8th, 2010.   Cancellations may be rescheduled.   Your help in completing and returning paperwork in a timely manner is greatly appreciated.

1.  DOWNHILL SKIING.   Students in Grades 1-6 leave the school on the bus at approximately 11:00 a.m.   Cannon Mountain Ski School is responsible for coordination of instruction.  Lessons will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Cannon Mountain, followed by free skiing with a chaperone from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m.   At 2:10 p.m., students leave Cannon to come back to school on the bus.  Students may stay at the mountain after 2:00 p.m., if a signed permission slip from their parent is provided to Joyce Evans.  If your child stays at the mountain after 2:00 p.m. following each lesson, please provide a note to Joyce prior to the start of the Winter Outdoor Program.  Changes can be made in writing on a weekly basis, if necessary.  The estimated cost is expected to be $50.00 if you use your own equipment and $96.00 if you rent equipment from Cannon Mountain.  As soon as exact costs are provided to us, they will be posted in the newsletter.   A representative from Cannon Mountain will be at the school in early December to fit the children for rental equipment.  Details will be posted in the newsletter as they become available.

2.  SNOWBOARDING.  This program is only available to students in Grades 4, 5, and 6.  Students leave the school on the bus at approximately 11:00 a.m.

3.  CROSS COUNTRY SKIING.   Private vehicles will leave the school for Bretton Woods Nordic Center at approximately 10:15 a.m.    Bretton Woods Nordic Center is responsible for coordination of instruction.   In addition to the school representatives, a sufficient number of parent chaperones will be required in order for this program to be successful.   This number will be determined once we have an exact number of participants.   Kindergarten students must be accompanied by an adult for one-on-one supervision.   A one hour lesson begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by free skiing with chaperones until 1:30 p.m.  Children will be transported back to school for dismissal at the regular time.   Chaperones may continue to ski at the Nordic Center with their child until closing.   If another child stays with you, a signed permission slip from their parent must be provided to Joyce Evans on the morning of the program.   The cost is $38 if you use your own equipment and $56 if you need to rent.

4.  WINTER FUN.  This program can include snowshoeing, tracking, tubing, sledding, ice skating, or just having fun playing in the snow.  In addition to the school representatives, a sufficient amount of parent chaperones will be required in order for this program to be successful.   This number will be determined once we have an exact amount of participants.  Kindergarten students must be accompanied by an adult for one-on-one supervision.  The cost is $29.00 and includes any equipment rentals that may be required (skates/tubes/snowshoes).  Private vehicles will be required for events that will take place away from the school.  Departure times and locations will be provided as necessary.

All pricing includes a cup of hot chocolate for each day of each program.    If payment of any of these fees creates a financial hardship and threatens your child’s participation, please call Joyce at 823-7741.   No child will be denied participation in any program.

Regardless of the program chosen, warm clothes are a must.   Please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing for his/her activity (jacket, snow pants, warm boots, heavy socks, hat or helmet, mittens, scarves).   Extra hats, gloves, and socks are a great idea, too.  Your child will not have fun if he/she is cold or wet.

VOLUNTEERS are essential to ensure the safety of all children participating in the Winter Outdoor Program, and are also needed for a variety of tasks from assisting primary students with boots and clothes, serving hot chocolate, directing traffic in the lodge, skiing with groups, or driving to Bretton Woods Nordic Center and other locations.   Please complete a separate Volunteer Sign-Up Sheet if you wish to help.

Please take the time now to talk to your child/children and determine in which program they wish to participate. In order to keep our costs down, only paperwork for the program you choose will be sent home.   A Registration/Release form, along with detailed information about each program is available several ways:

  • pick up the information at the Open House on October 1st
  • visit the school’s website (information is expected to be available on October 1st)
  • send a note to Joyce or your child’s teacher requesting specific paperwork

Your cooperation in returning the completed paperwork, by the due dates indicated on the registration forms, is greatly appreciated.
